Must-see Christmas markets in Barcelona

Barcelona's markets are the real stars of the festive season. With years of history behind them, each one offers a unique experience that combines shopping, crafts and the city's characteristic festive atmosphere.

Fira de Santa Llúcia

Located opposite the Cathedral, the Fira de Santa Llúcia is Barcelona's most iconic Christmas fair. Its origins date back to the 18th century, and today it brings together dozens of stalls selling nativity scene figures, Christmas trees, decorative items, local crafts and traditional sweets. Children especially enjoy the Tió gegant, a giant log that gives out symbolic gifts and has become a traditional attraction for families.

Fira de Nadal de la Sagrada Familia

At the foot of Gaudí's masterpiece is another much-loved market, with a more family-oriented and artisanal focus. Here you will find handmade products, decorative items, wooden toys, Christmas desserts and a very welcoming atmosphere. There are also workshops for children and themed areas that make the visit even more special.

Fira de Reis de Gran Via

A kilometrelong market where families can stroll for hours. It is the perfect place to buy toys, children's books, traditional sweets, handmade clothing, or small gifts to exchange during the holidays. Its variety and festive atmosphere make it a favourite for the little ones.

Children's activities during Christmas in Barcelona

The city offers a comprehensive programme of events for children, with spaces where they can play, learn, create and have fun without limits.

La Ciutat dels Somnis, the former Children's Festival

The Fira de Barcelona  is hosting La Ciutat dels Somnis (The City of Dreams) from 27 to 31 December, one of the biggest and most eagerly awaited children's events of the year. It includes educational activities, sports areas, creativity workshops, shows, interactive circuits, science and technology areas, giant games and experiences that encourage learning through play. It's the perfect plan for a full day out with the family.

Christmas at Poble Espanyol

Every December, this space is transformed into a charming Christmas village. From 20 December to 4 January, children can visit themed houses decorated with Christmas motifs, take part in craft workshops, enjoy family shows, walk through the famous tunnel of light, and deliver their letters to Santa Claus or the Three Wise men until 24 December. The setting is so beautiful that many visitors consider it one of the best places in Barcelona to experience Christmas.

Music, culture and Christmas shows

Christmas in Barcelona is also experienced through art, music and the city's major venues.

These are unforgettable experiences, especially for those who want to experience Christmas with a more cultural touch.

Theatre and performances for children

Many theatres in Barcelona include performances adapted to the Christmas theme in their programmes: magic, puppets, musicals, traditional stories, interactive shows, etc. Among the most notable are the SAT. Nativity scenes and Christmas traditions in Barcelona

The city keeps its traditions alive, some very old and others more innovative.

Nativity scene in Plaça Sant Jaume

Every year it is reinvented with creative ideas: from traditional designs to contemporary installations that surprise visitors. It is an essential stop on the Christmas tour. And this year it is replaced by a large Christmas star.

Living nativity scenes

Numerous neighbourhoods, parishes and civic centres such as the Basilica of Mare de Déu de la Mercè, the Basilica of Santa María del MarBarcelona CathedralBarcelona City Hall and many more organise living nativity scenes where biblical scenes are recreated with real characters, animals and traditional decorations. These activities delight children and make for ideal weekend outings.

The tradition of Tió de Nadal

Tió de Nadal is one of the most beloved icons for children in Catalonia. Throughout December, squares, markets, and schools organise sessions to make the tió poop, a fun moment that has become a symbol of Catalan Christmas.

The spectacular Three Kings Parade in Barcelona

The arrival of the Three Wise men is one of the most eagerly awaited moments for children in Barcelona. Every year, Their Majesties disembark, and in 2026, on 5 January, they will do so from Avinguda del Marquès de l'Argentera and Passeig de Colom, heading towards Avinguda del Paral·lel and Ronda de Sant Pau. After passing through the Sant Antoni Market, the parade heads down Sepúlveda Street towards Plaza de Espanya, in a parade full of light, music, themed floats and royal pages who hand out sweets and greet the public. It is a massive event that marks the magical end of the Christmas season and leaves lasting memories for families.
