The origins and legend of Sant Jordi: Catalan history and tradition

Sant Jordi has his origins in Saint George (George of Cappadocia), a Christian martyr who died on 23 April 303 AD. Over time, his legend and bravery made him the patron saint of various territories, including Catalunya and Aragon, as well as countries such as England, Ukraine and Bulgaria. The tradition of giving a rose dates back to the Middle Ages, when this gesture symbolised devotion and affection for one’s partner. The exchange of books is a more recent custom, introduced in 1926 by the Valencian writer Vicent Clavel. Today, this event also marks International Book Day.

Apart from the historical account of the saint, there is also the legend of Saint George, which adds a mythical element that has endured over the centuries and is now an essential part of the festival. According to popular legend, a fearsome dragon terrorised the people of Montblanc, devouring animals and forcing the inhabitants to sacrifice people chosen by lot to appease its fury. One day, the unfortunate chosen one was the kingdom’s princess, but before the creature could attack her, Sant Jordi appeared on his horse and confronted the beast, defeating it with his lance. From the dragon’s blood sprang a rosebush, a symbol of life and hope, the poetic origin of the gift of the rose.

During Sant Jordi, both locals and visitors will enjoy the streets and venues brimming with activities offered by the city’s official programme. On the eve of 23 April, the traditional opening speech takes place, marking the official launch of Book Day, organised by the libraries. From that moment on, the city is filled with a variety of events for all ages, such as open days at cultural and iconic venues. These include City Hall, the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site and the Sagrada Familia, with free entry for people named Jordi, Jordina or variants of the name.

These stalls are set up on streets that have been specially designated and closed to traffic to ensure a pleasant stroll and allow everyone to fully enjoy the festive atmosphere. They are spread across various neighbourhoods of the city, notably areas such as Sant-Montjuïc, the Eixample and Carrer de Gràcia, which fill up with visitors every year.
