Best plans to celebrate Father's Day

Best plans to celebrate Father's Day

The idea of Father's Day originated in the United States in the 1900s. In 1909, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd began promoting the idea of a special day to honour fathers, inspired by Mother's Day. Dodd wanted to honour her father, a war veteran who had raised his children as a single parent. The idea quickly spread across the country and in 1972, US President Richard Nixon officially declared the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.

In Spain, although the origin is uncertain, it is said that the idea was promoted by the tie brand "Casa Gautier", in the 1940s, who saw in this date an opportunity to sell more ties as a gift for fathers. Spain, along with other Spanish-speaking countries, is one of the countries that celebrate this day on a different date to the United States, coinciding with St. Joseph's Day, the father of Jesus in the Catholic religion, and the third weekend in March.

Father's Day is an opportunity to show love and appreciation for fathers and father figures. Gifts on this day can be everything from cards and flowers to technological devices and tools. Many people choose to give their fathers a gift or an original present. Here is a list of original gifts to give on this day, that will make you have an unforgettable experience with your father:

  1. A trip to nature: Catalonia has a wide variety of natural landscapes around Barcelona, such as Montserrat or the Collserola Natural Park. On the other hand, there are also plenty of beaches where you can spend the day, such as Tarragona, Cambrils, Torredembarra, Ametlla de Mar or Salou. Remember that you can reach these beautiful places by bus. We offer a wide range of routes and timetables by public transport. Whether it's the beach or the mountains, a day outdoors is always welcome.

  1. Sports activities: If your father likes sports, you can make plans to practice some sporting activity together. There are many hiking routes that can be done by bike in the beautiful Costa Dorada.

  1. Special meal: Father's Day is a good excuse to enjoy a special meal as a family. Celebrate this day by having a paella with the whole family at Llevant Beach, Capellans Beach o Cala Crancs in Salou.

  1. Cultural visit: Another option is to visit a cultural site, such as a museum or historical monument. Barcelona, for example, has many options, such as the Picasso Museum, Park Güell or the Sagrada Familia. You can move freely with BusPlana bus line that goes from Cambrils, Salou, La Pineda or Tarragona to the city centre of Barcelona.
