The history of the April Fair

Although the April Fair is now celebrated with great enthusiasm in Tarragona, its roots lie in the south of the country, in the city of Seville. This celebration did not begin as a festive event as we know it today, but rather as a fair dedicated to the livestock trade. Its origins date back to 25 August 1846, when two businessmen living in Seville, Narciso Bonaplata, of Catalan origin, and José María de Ibarra, from a Basque family, decided to submit a proposal to the Cabildo Municipal (town council) requesting permission to organise an annual fair on 19, 20 and 21 April. That initiative, which initially sought only to boost the city’s commercial activity, eventually became one of Andalusia’s most iconic festivals.

Following that initial proposal, it was not until 5 March 1847 that Queen Isabella II officially granted Seville the privilege of holding its own fair. Thanks to this authorisation, the first edition took place a month later, lasting the three days that the two businessmen had suggested. The City Council not only considered the idea suitable for boosting the local economy, but it also had the backing of numerous livestock farmers and farmers in the area, who saw this event as an opportunity to boost their trade. That collective support and the approval it received marked the starting point of a tradition which, over time, evolved far beyond its initial purpose.

The arrival of the April Fair in Catalonia

The arrival of the April Fair in Tarragona is closely linked to the Andalusian and Extremaduran communities that settled in Catalonia between the 1950s and 1970s. These groups, deeply attached to their customs, sought to keep their traditions alive whilst sharing them with others. This gave rise to the idea of organising a fair inspired by the one in Seville, which would serve as a meeting place and a cultural celebration. Over time, the initiative gained support and participation, becoming a space where music, dance, gastronomy and the connection to Andalusian roots could be openly expressed.

The first edition held outside Andalusia took place in Barcelona in 1971 and was organised by the Association of Andalusian Regional Houses with the aim of bringing the spirit of the Seville Fair to the Catalan public. That starting point paved the way for new celebrations in other cities, including Tarragona, where the fair has been held since 1981 and became particularly well-established from 1990 onwards, with the Bonavista neighbourhood as its epicentre. Since then, every spring thousands of visitors gather to enjoy the marquees, flamenco and Andalusian cuisine, making this festival an unmissable event on the local calendar.

Traditions and activities at the April Fair

The April Fair is world-renowned for showcasing its culture and traditions through a combination of events, shows and activities that bring the week from 21 to 26 April to life. During this time, the streets and fairgrounds are transformed into a vibrant scene filled with colour, music and Andalusian tradition. The casetas become meeting places where families and friends enjoy sevillanas, rumbas and live performances, whilst the smell of ‘pescaíto frito’ and rebujitos fills the air. In addition to the music and food, the fair is notable for its horse rides, fairground attractions and activities designed for all ages, creating a unique experience rooted in popular culture.

Flamenco performances, sevillanas competitions and the fairground attractions are combined with culinary offerings that highlight the traditional flavours of the south.
